The Segal Education Award Will Be Used to Pay Educational Expenses

I understand and agree that the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award will be used to pay current educational expenses at Relay GSE toward my educational program.

Eligible schools are higher educational institutions, both domestic and foreign, that currently participate in the Department of Education’s Title IV student aid programs. They are referred to as "Title IV schools." This category includes most post-secondary colleges, universities, and technical schools.

Current educational expenses are expenses incurred after the start of your AmeriCorps service. Expenses that pre-date your AmeriCorps service are not considered “current.” However, if you have a qualified student loan to pay for expenses incurred prior to your AmeriCorps service, you can use your award to repay the qualified loan.

Eligible educational expenses include the cost of attendance (COA) for a degree or certificate program at a Title IV school. COA may include tuition, books and supplies, transportation, room and board, and other expenses. The institution's Financial Aid Office determines a student's COA, based on U.S. Department of Education guidance and regulations.

More information may be found at the Corporation for National & Community Service "Use Your Education Award"

The Segal Education Award Is Considered Taxable Income

I understand and agree that the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is considered taxable income in the calendar year it is used. When a person uses all or part of the Education Award for current educational expenses and/or uses the award to repay qualified student loans, the total amount paid from the Education Award will be included as taxable income for that year. There are no taxes withheld from the award.

By the end of January each year, you will receive a 1099 MISC form from the Corporation for National & Community Service for payments totaling $600.00 or more during the previous year. The 1099 MISC form reflects the amount that is reported as taxable miscellaneous income to the IRS.

The Segal Education Award Cannot Be Applied to Future Terms by Relay GSE Once Refunded

I understand and agree that Relay GSE is refunding any Segal AmeriCorps Education Award funds that exceed my current outstanding tuition charges. I acknowledge that the refunds will be used toward educational expenses listed on this form. I know that I will remain responsible for paying all future financial obligations.
